Partnering for Porcupine Care

Porcupine care

The Radiology team at the Animal Medical Center of Seattle recently had the opportunity to assist the Woodland Park Zoo with advanced imaging for one of their African crested porcupines, part of the “prickle” currently residing in the zoo’s African Savanna habitat (formerly home to hippos).

This porcupine was referred to AMCS for a CT scan to help investigate changes noted during the zoo’s medical evaluation. The procedure was performed by our board-certified veterinary radiologist, Dr. Derek Standlee, DVM, MPH, DACVR, in collaboration with the zoo’s veterinary staff. The CT scan helped the zoo’s medical team refine their diagnostic approach and next steps for care.

This was not Dr. Standlee’s first time imaging a porcupine either. In fact, he has worked with many throughout his career! Dr. Standlee’s expertise spans multiple imaging modalities including ultrasound, MRI, and CT. His passion lies in tailoring imaging studies to each individual patient, whether cat, dog or porcupine, to ensure the highest diagnostic quality and minimize the need for repeat procedures.

We’re proud to partner with Woodland Park Zoo, whose dedicated team provides expert care and housing for this fascinating species. Visitors can see African crested porcupines in the zoo’s African Savanna area.

Fun fact: a group of porcupines is called a prickle! ??
